I got a call from somebody who used to be the president of Little Persons of America. She got called from some producers who wanted someone of a certain size in the John Hughes film ‘Baby’s Day Out.’ So that was my big break, as the stunt double of a nine-month-old.

There were a lot of times I’d hide in my locker and jump out and surprise people. Whenever friends would come by, I’d open the locker and hit’ em.

I’ve never been tall. So it’s not like I was six-foot, got paralyzed, and now I’m in a wheelchair. It doesn’t really faze me all that much.

I told my family, ‘If I get out of line, just kick my butt.’ The last thing that I want is to change.

We grew up Amish, but my parents left the religion when I was a child. The Amish have lots of rules, and my dad thought many people in the faith were hypocritical because they’d tell others not to do something and then do it themselves.

I was a typical boy growing up, even though I wasn’t particularly outgoing or chatty. I loved running around and playing football. My siblings and I are only a year apart in age, so we played together. Sometimes it was good being so close, sometimes it wasn’t – like when they’d steal my candy and toys.

All my family is average-sized, apart from me. I didn’t really think about my size until I got older, a few years before high school. It had never really fazed me that much.

If my parents didn’t raise me in the way that they did, I wouldn’t be in the position I am now. They raised me very independent and taught me you can do anything you want to. I have an average-sized brother and an average-sized sister, and I had to do everything they had to.

People categorise people as being disabled, and it’s basically whatever you put your mind to, you can do, and everybody that has limitations, they can still do anything they want as long as they set their mind to it.
